Suryagarh Haveli

A heritage stay on the edge of the Thar

A 400-year-old haveli on the edge of the Thar Desert

Restored rooms, a courtyard kitchen, and views of Jaisalmer Fort that do not need much explaining.

The Story

A house with a history

Suryagarh Haveli was built by a merchant family in the early 1600s, three lanes back from what is now the fort road. It stood empty for the better part of two decades before a slow, room-by-room restoration brought it back — the same sandstone, the same jharokha windows, wiring and plumbing hidden behind them. Nine rooms open onto a single courtyard. There is no lobby to speak of; guests tend to end up in the courtyard anyway, over chai in the morning and something stronger after the sun goes down over the dunes.

Meals are served in the courtyard or, in cooler months, on the rooftop — built around Marwari thalis and a short, seasonal a la carte menu. Advance notice feeds the kitchen better than a printed menu would.

In Guests’ Words

We arrived expecting a hotel and found a home with very good architecture. The staff remembered our names by the second morning.

The rooftop at sunset is reason enough to come. Dinner tasted like it had been cooked for us, not for a menu.
Daniel R. · Direct guest · Feb 2026
Our driver got lost twice finding it, which felt appropriate for a place this quiet. Worth every wrong turn.
